William Ruto Profile
William Ruto full name is William Samoei arap Ruto. He was born on born 21 December 1966 in Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County.
William Ruto parents, family
William Ruto is the son of Daniel Cheruiyot and Sarah Cherono Cheruiyot. He is brother to Paulo Maritim Ruto.
William Ruto Education
William Samoei arap Ruto attended Kamagut Primary School for his primary school education. He then joined Wareng Secondary School for his O-Levels education. After completing his O-level education he joined Kapsabet Boys High School, Nandi for his A-Level education.
He joined the University of Nairobi and pursued a Degree in BSc (Botany and Zoology). He graduated from the University in 1990.
He was also a member of Christian Union where he served as Chairman. He was ranked the best student in his class.
He enrolled for MSc in Environmental Science and graduated in 2011.
Currently he is pursuing a PhD from the University of Nairobi.

William Ruto married his sweetheart Rachel Chebet Ruto in 1991 after graduating from the University of Nairobi.

William Ruto political career
William Ruto’s political career begun in 1992 when he, together with other politicians like Cyrus Jirongo, spear-headed the YK’92 movement meant to campaign for President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi in the first multi-party elections in the same year.
in 1997 Willian Ruto vied for the Eldoret North Parliamentary seat on a KANU ticket and he triumphed over the incumbent Reuben Chesire.
He was appointed the Assistant Minister in the Office of the President in 1997 and later promoted to a full Minister for Home Affairs in August 2002.
During the 9th Parliament he served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Reform.
In 2002 he won again the Eldoret North Parliamentary seat.
In 2005 during the first constitution of Kenya referendum, William Ruto joined forces with other political bigwigs like Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka and Joe Nyaga to support the Orange side of the referendum choice and they won with a landslide.
This gave birth to ODM – Orange Democratic Movement, an outfit which William Ruto, Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka and Joe Nyaga were crowned as the Pentagon. Each launched their presidential bid separately but later on agreed that Raila Odinga be the sole flag bearer.
Having won in the 2005 referendum with a landslide, the Orange movement was 100% sure that with the same numbers they would clinch the 2007 Presidential seat but the elections were allegedly stolen and they lost. The 2007 – 2008 Post election violence begun.
After the PEV William Ruto was named in the Ocampo six list and their relations with Raila Odinga begun to worsen. By 2010 William Ruto and Raila Odinga were not sharing the same seat this is because William Ruto had stepped dowm from his Cabinet Seat in the Ministry of Agriculture.
In the Ocampo six list was Uhuru Kenyatta. The two being very influential individuals in their respective regions entered into a marriage of convenience to vie for the 2013 presidential posts. One amazing thing is that in 2007 they were the greatest political rivals in PNU and ODM.
After their confirmation of charges for crimes against by the ICC in the Hague between 1st to 8th September 2011, it was evident that William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta’s goose was cooked. Uhuru Kenyatta formed the TNA party and William Ruto formed URP Party. They whipped up sympathy from Kenyans and got overwhelming support.
In January 2013, William Ruto was nominated as the Jubilee Alliance presidential running mate of Uhuru Kenyatta.
In March 2013, Uhuru Kenyatta was elected the President of the Republic of Kenya making William Ruto the first Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.
William Ruto – ICC case collapsed and cases Dropped he is Acquitted and Free

On April 5th, 2016 Wiliam Samoei arap Ruto was finally acquitted of all charges leveled against him by the ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.
The announcement was made by The ICC court judges in the Hague based court. The Judges however said that the ICC Prosecutor can however appeal the case.
Genesis of William Ruto ICC Case
On March 8, 2011, William Ruto, Uhuru kenyatta, Francis Muthaura, Henry Kosgey, Hussein Ali and Joshua Sang, were indicted by the International Criminal Court for charges of crimes against humanity committed during the 2007–2008 post election violence in Kenya.
William Samoei arap Ruto is accused of being criminally responsible as an indirect co-perpetrator for the crimes against humanity of:
- Murder
- Deportation or forcible transfer of population; and
- Persecution
According to the ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, William Ruto was the undisputed king of the Kalenjin community and through his influence he, through his network, organized and funded Kalenjin youths who were tasked with killing, displacing and persecuting members of the Kikuyu community residing in the Rift Valley Province.
After the pacification of the 2007-2008 post election violence, a Commission of Inquiry to the violence was set up in February, 2008 by the Kenya Government during the Mediation period by Kofi Annan. The Commission was headed by Justice Philip Waki.
The Waki Commission came up with a list of people who were most culpable for the Post election violence. This list was branded the Ocampo Six because these were the names handed over to the then ICC chief prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo
The Ocampo Six were Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto, Ambassador Francis Muthaura, former police commissioner Mohammed Hussein Ali, Henry Kosgey, Joshua arap Sang.
On 15 December 2010, the Prosecutor of the ICC requested Pre-Trial Chamber II of the ICC to issue summonses to appear for William Samoei Ruto, Joshua Sang and Henry Kosgey, on the basis that there existed reasonable grounds to believe that they were criminally responsible for crimes against humanity, pursuant to article 7 of the Rome Statute.
On March 8, 2011, William Ruto was indicted by the International Criminal Court for the charges of crimes against humanity leveled against him.
An ICC Pre-Trial Chamber summoned him for the Initial appearance hearing before the court on April 7, 2011, together with Joshua Sang and Henry Kiprono Kosgey.
The Confirmation of charges hearing was held between 1st to 8th September 2011 and the decision on the confirmation of charges was done on 23 January 2012.
Opening of the trial begun on 10 September 2013 and the case has been on since then.
