Smokin Wanjala Background
Smokin Wanjala full name is Smokin Charles Wanjala. In the professional circles he is referred to as Ho. Justice Smokin C. wanjala.
He was born in June 22, 1960 in Machakos Kenya.
Smokin Wanjala Education
1n 1984, Smokin graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B, Hons.) from the University of Nairobi.
In 1985, he graduated with a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
In 1986, he graduated with a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Columbia University New York.
In 2000, He graduated with a Doctorate in Law (PhD) from the University of Ghent, Belgium.
Smokin Wanjala Career
Smokin Charles Wanjala was a Law Lecturer at the University of Nairobi for twenty (20) years (1986-2004) where he offered instruction in diverse areas of law including, Land Law, International Law, Human Rights Law, Criminal Law and Law of the Sea.
From 1986 to 1994 he was just a Lecturer of law at the University Nairobi but from 1986-1994 he was a senior lecturer of law.
Between 2000 and 2004, Justice Wanjala was the first Chairman of the Public Complaints Committee on the Environment (PCC) which is one of the Compliance Committees of the National Environment and Management Authority-NEMA.
Between 2002 and 2004 he was the Executive director Center Law and Research International.
While still lecturing at the University of Nairobi, he was appointed by President Kibaki to serve as the Joint Secretary to the Commission on Illegally and Irregularly acquired Public Land (the Ndung’u Commission) in 2003. He is credited with having overseen the compilation and writing of what has become popularly known as the Ndung’u Report.
In October 2004, he was appointed as Assistant Director of the defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) where he served in that capacity until 2009.
Justice Wanjala was actively involved in the struggle for Constitutional Reform in Kenya especially during his time in Civil Society in the 1990’s. He was one of the four founder members of the Centre for Law and Research International (CLARION) where they pioneered Civic Education in the Country.
He is a member of the International Commission of Jurists, ICJ-Kenya Chapter and the Kenya National Academy of Sciences.
While still in the supreme court, Smokin was selected as the chairman of JSC Human Resource Management commitee that oversees the establishment of appropriate human resources policies and strategies

In June 2012, Smokin Wanjala was among 5 Justices nominated to the Supreme Court of Kenya by the Judicial Service Commission (Kenya).
After Chief Justice Willy Mutunga announced his early retirement, Smoking Wanjala has shown interests of becoming the second Chief Justice of Kenya’s Supreme Court.

Smokin Wanjala’s parents are Mr Antonio Wanjala and Teresa Anyango Wanjala. Mzee Antonio Wanjala died was laid to rest at his home in Sifuyo village, Samia in January 2009.
