James Ndungu Gethenji removal from Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations
In March 2016, the National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations Committee wanted to remove its chairman Ndung’u Gethenji. This follows the clerk’s approval of a motion of no confidence by Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa who is also the deputy minority whip.
Wamalwa received the support of 14 of the 28 committee members in the notice of motion addressed to Ndungu Gethenji. The Kiambu MPs lobbied committee members to replace the Tetu MP with Kiambu woman representative Annah Nyokabi.
Kiambu MPs met and resolved to replace Gethenji. But some MPs from Nyeri urged the committee members to vote against the motion or select a different person from Nyokabi.
Ndungu Gethenji however, downplayed the quest to remove him, saying it is being driven by a few disgruntled members. In the motion, Wamalwa and the others say the committee had lost confidence in Gethenji’s leadership, accusing him of absenteeism and lack of seriousness.
“His poor and irregular attendance of meetings had crippled the growth and operations of the committee,” the motion read. They also said Gethenji had been making unilateral decisions, especially in relation to foreign trips.
