HELB loan is released before the new academic year starts. Thereafter, students who fail to secure a loan or are awarded inadequate amounts are encouraged to appeal. Each appeal is reviewed on its own merit.
If one fails to get a loan, the following could be possible reasons: The student may not have provided adequate information about him/herself as requested or the student may have provided false information on the loan application form.

HELB Loan Waiver 2018, HELB Penalty Amnesty
Education CS Amina Mohamed has announced a 100 per cent penalty waiver to past HELB beneficiaries who clear their loans in lump sum.
She said this during the HELB employers’ forum held in Nairobi on Thursday. She stated that the grace period runs from May 3, 2018 to June 30, 2018.
To benefit from this, one must repay the HELB balance in lump-sum. CEO Charles Ringera said 78,000 loanees owe the institution to a tune of Sh8.1 billion.
HELB Smart Card
Amina Mohamed further directed all university students to be issued with smart cards from HELB to access loans.
This will assist in removing physical contact of university deans and students ledger which causes delays.
“It will help the students to pay fees from the tuition e-wallet which is locked by a special system for that purpose only,” she said.
