Peter Njuguna Gitau was born in 1965 in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Kenya.

He has been the Member of Parliament for Mwea Constituency in Kirinyaga County since 2007. In 2007, he was elected to the 10th Parliament on a PNU ticket and in March 2013, he was elected to the 11th parliament on The National Alliance (TNA) party ticket in the Jubilee Alliance.

In the National Assembly he is a Member of Procedure and House Rules Committee and a member of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives.

In the 10th Parliament he was a member of the Departmental Committee on Lands and Natural Resources and Committee on Implementation.

Peter Njuguna Gitau charged in court for incitement in South Ngariama

In March 2010, Mwea MP Peter Njuguna Gitau was charged in a Kerugoya court with inciting people to violence in a controversial ranch in Kirinyaga district. Gitau is accused that on March 12 2010, he incited violence by saying that the people who have been resettled in the South Ngariama ranch should vacate, failure to which they will be forcibly evicted.

His utterances resulted in the death of four people who were living in the ranch. He uttered the words in Kerugoya town during the hearing of the Interim Independent Boundary Review Commission. The principal magistrate, Stephen Mbungi released the MP on a Sh20,000 bond.

Peter Njuguna Gitau arrested in Malindi for bribing voters

In March 2016, Peter Njuguna Gitau was Arrested in Malindi for bribing voters. He was found in possession of Ksh. 200,000 in cash. He recorded a statement with the police and was released.
