University of Nairobi students riot after Babu Owino won SONU Elections
University of Nairobi students have gone on a rampage over disputed SONU election results which have declared Babu Owino chairman for a fourth time.
According to sources, career student Babu Owino was involved in election malpractices which saw him beat his closest contender Mike Jacobs.
Paul Ongili Owini popularly known as Babu Owino was declared duly elected leader after garnering over 18,000 votes.
“Mike Jacobs was leading, but the tallies changed and Babu won,” a student said who did not want to be named.
Most UON students had on Friday hinted that they would protest on the streets if Babu Owino was announced the winner.
Most students were puzzled by Owino’s win because Mike Jacobs was leading in all campuses by midnight Friday, it is not clear how Babu won.
“There are no real results. They have all been cooked,” a student who fears Owino’s rowdy bodyguards said.
The elections, which ended at around 5pm on Friday, saw heavy presence of anti-riot police who ensured peaceful elections in all voting centres.
In the recent past the student have expressed concern over Babu’s leadership style linking him to hooliganism after a video of him harassing his closest rival Mike Jacobs surfaced.
On Saturday, the students took to the streets in protest chanting “Babu must go, Mugabe must go”.
Babu has already been sworn in as SONU chairman.
