CBK Governor rejects Raila Odinga’s request for a Eurobond meeting

The Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge has rejected CORD leader Raila Odinga’s request for a meeting to discuss the Eurobond saga.

Responding to a letter by Raila Odinga on Wednesday, Njoroge said the information that Raila had requested was privileged and cannot be shared with third parties.

In the letter dated March 29th, Raila had requested for a formal face-to-face meeting with the Governor.

“We would like to request a formal face-to-face meeting with you personally in your capacity as the CBK Governor and with relevant staff at CBK to review and discuss receipt and accounting for the proceeds of the Eurobond and to seek and obtain any additional information and necessary clarification that may arise.”

Though the government, through National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, has defended itself from the allegations by claiming that the proceeds were channelled to various ministries, Raila has maintained that close to Ksh 140 billion from the proceeds cannot be accounted for.

In a press briefing held in January this year, Raila named Treasury CS Rotich, Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thuge, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, Central Bank Board Chair Mohamed Nyaoga, former CBK Governor Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u and other civil servants as persons of interest in the loss of Eurobond cash.

He noted that seven transactions purporting to transfer Eurobond funds into consolidated fund are not supported by credible documents while calling President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare the Eurobond scandal a national disaster.
